WONDER WORKS HISTORY | Wonder Works Toy Store, Charleston SC

What Sparked the Magic?

kidbubbChristine Osborne and co-owner Dan Morrisey opened the doors to the first Wonder Works toy store on August 10, 1990. Their mission was to create a different kind of toy store – one that inspired the magic and wonder of fun.  The two met while working together at Southern Pines Hospital from 1981-1990. With a degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, Christine worked as an Occupational Therapist and was promoted to the hospital’s Marketing Director in 1985. Dan moved to Charleston in 1981 to help open the hospital and served as Hospital Administrator.  But Christine and Dan wanted to do something more, something inspirational. So the two put their heads and their passions together and opened Wonder Works. The business they built together has now seen two generations of local children play, grow, and bring their own children back to experience the wonder of a new toy sparking creativity and joy.  Dr. Dan courageously battled pancreatic cancer and passed away in 2007. He will forever be a part of Wonder Works.

Today’s Magic and Wonder

What began as neighborhood store focused on science and imagination has grown into a thriving local toy chain with four locations throughout the Charleston, SC areadinobubb. Wonder Works is a toy store like no other, aiming to inspire creativity and a sense of wonder with specialty toys, gifts, books, and gadgets. Our mission is to create a wonderFUNtastical play experience with thousands of toys available for hands-on play in every store. As a leader in the specialty toy industry, Wonder Works is always first to feature the hottest new toys on the market. Wonder Works is a vocal advocate for the Shop Local movement, proudly offering merchandise from local authors, inventors, and manufacturers. At its heart, the company’s passion lies with the growth and development of child entrepreneurs, child entertainers, and children’s charities – kids whose passion for a cause has driven them to build businesses and bring about positive change in their community. In addition to participating in these and other local movements, Wonder Works hosts two free family events every year: Wonderfest and the Cooper River Bridge Run Kids Run, and our holiday Elfstravaganza in November. But don’t wait – come visit Wonder Works and experience the magic today!
